Performance testing / load testing

One of the key milestones of any website testing is its performance check (performance testing). At the same time, ‘performance’ is quite a broad term and includes conducting various types of testing, such as stress and load testing, stability and scalability testing, JavaScript test in browser, as well as browser compatibility testing.

Why It’s Necessary to Conduct Website Performance Testing

First and foremost, the website performance (productivity) testing is necessary to speed up its load time, which in turn allows you to increase its rating in search engines, improve conversion, and also reduce the bounce rate, which results in the increase in the flow of customers from the website. At the same time, this type of testing involves detection of factors negatively affecting the website performance, such as certain scripts, fonts and plugins (HTML, JavaScript, CSS), large-size images, compatibility with various browsers, website uptime or page load time, maximum permissible load and maximum continuous load. It is our specialists’ responsibility  to  detect all these factors and to record them in the bug trackers.

Main Types of Performance Testing

While conducting performance testing we apply the following main types of test cases:

  • Website Stress Test
    It is performed to determine the maximum benchmark for website performance. This test establishes the dependence of key website productivity indicators (i.e. transaction response time, number of requests per second, number of transactions per second) on the number of simultaneous website users;
  • Website Load Test
    It determines the website performance level over a long period of time (4-8 hours). At this testing stage we perform additional checks of the website components, which allows detecting errors in the overall website operation (for instance, a memory leak) which might be caused by a large number of users using the system over a considerable amount of time;
  • Website Cross-Browser Test It is used to check the product compatibility with various versions of the existing browsers and the website normal operation when it’s launched on various devices;
  • JavaScript Test in Browser
    This type of testing is designed to detect the presence of this option, which can slow down the browser or pose a potential threat of introducing malicious codes.

To obtain more reliable verification results, we also carry out a number of auxiliary performance tests:

  • volumetric test, or the verification of the website performance while increasing the amount of information in the database;
  • stability test, which allows to confirm the website performance capabilities while using it 24/7;
  • scalability test, which detects the website ability to have increased productivity while increasing the scale of its non-functional capabilities.

When conducting website performance testing, our company specialists use manual and automated verification methods, applying them on real devices and, if necessary, on various emulators.
